Review:

Matt’s second invite as Vicky Sjohall’s special guest was a very wonderful experience! Matt and Vicky played to an audience of about 30 – all fans, who were there to enjoy the music! Vicky kicked off the evening with a solid set of older material, then Matt took the stage for about 45 minutes. Looking great in a white t-shirt and cargo pants, Matt played solo at the piano starting things off slowly with a beautiful performance of JOE. This led into the crowd pleasing OH GIRL which contained an improvised middle portion tonight! Sprinkled in the set were very old songs such as NEPTUNE (used as an intro to TAKE ME FAR AWAY) and THE CURE which were outtakes from the original ‘math class’ album Matt recorded 5 years ago! Matt also played a lot of new material – PRIORIRY/SEAGULL AND THE SWAN were performed exquisitely, and REWIND was an epic closing piece. Matt was joined by the amazing ROSE RECORD for the last four songs of the set – Rose and Matt belted out the old favourite RED HOT MAMA, and did an excellent performance of AS I GO ALONG. The highlight of the set however, was Matt’s heartbreaking performance of PINK FLOYD’S NOBODY HOME from the movie THE WALL. Played with power and passion the audience was silent as Matt sang “I’ve got a strong urge to fly – but I’ve got nowhere to fly to”

After a short break Vicky Sjohall (Former member of Vancouver’s 4PLAY and now a member of CHERRYBOMB) joined Matt on stage for some classic CHERRYBOMB favourites as well as some covers! Among the humorous drunken stage banter about marijuana and Christina Aguilera, Matt and Vicky impressed the audience with their solid harmonies, and unrehearsed songs – CARNIVAL, ALMOST ALWAYS, and SIPPIN SODA’S (a special performance for a special girl – D-Hoo) were all highlights. Covering Sarah McLachlan’s GOOD ENOUGH, HOLD ON, FULL OF GRACE, and ANGEL as well as Tori Amos’ PRETTY GOOD YEAR Vicky Sjohall showed off her amazing vocal range. Matt took a turn on lead vocals for Elton John’s DANIEL and TINY DANCER as well as Billy Joel’s PIANO MAN. The entire concert lasted over three hours, and it was a lot of fun!
